A tour that includes a boat trip to see penguins on Martillo Island,
a visit to the fishing village of Almanza, and a delicious meal along the King Crab Route.
This exciting adventure combines an exclusive navigation to a penguin colony, a visit to the southernmost fishing village in the world, and an unforgettable gastronomic experience on the “King Crab Route.”
Located just 70 kilometers east of Ushuaia, the “King Crab Route” winds through the fishing community of Almanza, a picturesque village and the southernmost settlement in the country. Local artisans here not only specialize in king crab but also offer a diverse range of seafood dishes, all sourced from one of the world’s best-preserved marine environments.
We depart early from Ushuaia, heading north on National Route 3, the only access road from the city. This scenic drive takes us through the Patagonian Andean forest, surrounded by the Andes and vast peat bogs, a unique ecosystem of international importance. We continue our way passing in front of winter centers, where snow activities abound during the colder months, until we reach the junction with Route “J.” From there, we head south along the Lasifashaj River, reaching the coast.
We’ll stop at Victoria Lagoon for an interpretative break, where our professional guides will provide information about the flora and fauna in this stunning location.
Upon reaching Puerto Almanza, we board a small boat to navigate the Beagle Channel. The size of the vessel allows us to approach the islands more closely, ensuring an exclusive and harmonious experience with nature, without disturbing the penguins’ natural habitat. As we sail toward Martillo Island through the calm, protected channels, we’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery and the chance to spot various seabird species.
Finally, we arrive at Martillo Island, the natural home of charming penguins. Our semi-rigid boat will allow us to get up close and observe two species that nest on the island: Magellanic and Gentoo penguins.
On our return, we will explore the small village of about 15 fishing families, most of whom rely on artisanal fishing. They catch king crab, harvest seafood, or farm trout. Here, you can witness the richness of life at the end of the world and the craftsmanship behind this culinary treasure.
Back in the village, one of the families will welcome us into their home to enjoy a delicious local seafood dish in a setting of singular beauty.
Finally, we’ll begin our journey back to Ushuaia.
The Beagle Channel amazes us with its wildlife.
